I do recommend however that on a newly installed deck you wait at least three (3) months before staining it. If it is not sanded it will not make a good presentation.before, you stain make sure there is no dust left. While you've most likely used treated lumber or cedar never sand new wood.

Before you apply stain, make sure the surface is clean (no dust, dirt, wood fibers or grease), dry and free from mildew.
