My kitchen cabinets are also knotty pine but stained dark. Fortunately, it can be restored by cleaning it like you would most other pieces of wood. I have knotty pine wood paneling on the walls and ceiling. Knotty pine is a relatively soft wood, and it is highly susceptible to wear and tear over time, so to keep your cabinets in the best possible condition, you will have to use your paint brush to spread a thin coat of varnish over the whole exterior of the cabinet, making sure to spread it as evenly as possible. I painted some knotty pine doors about 3 years ago but (despite applying knotting solution) knots are showing through on nearly all of them! Pine — including knotty pine — is a classic, vernacular material that was critically important, it seems, to so pine paneling — including knotty pine panelling and including pickwick pine pattern panelling — was not exclusively made pickwick pine paneled kitchen cabinet doors in eartha kitsch's kitchen. I have some knotty pine on ceiling and wall, they are all vanished. Sand down surface> primer > paint.
