So the familiar 2x4 is actually 1 1/2 x 3 1/2. it does become clear over time, really it does. With construction lumber, it is ½ less up to a certain size (2 x 8 wide, i think) where it becomes 3/4 smaller. Dimensions at time of manufacture.
